{New York Times} Being Garifuna

We recently saw “Being Garifuna” on The New York Times website. The video goes hand-in-hand with an article about the complexities Latinos have fitting into Census categories.

This video follows the Miss Garifuna beauty pageant and speaks to the difficulty in marking identity when your roots are complex. Specifically for the Garifunas who are part Caribbean, part African and part Central American.

This is the kind of work and dialogue we love to see on Los Afro-Latinos.
